미국 얼터너티브 록 밴드 ‘노 다우트(No Doubt)’의 리드 싱어 그웬 스테파니 [No Doubt]

 

 

온갖 사안을 두고 서로 비판하고 해명하는 게 온통 요설로만 들리는 요즘입니다.이제는 뭐라고 떠들지 다 들여다보이는 발언들을 왜 고장난 레코드처럼 그렇게 틀어대는 건지. 소크라테스 형님에게 “세상이 왜 이래?”라고 암만 얘기해봐야 아무 소용없는 듯합니다. 차라리 이럴 땐 비트겐슈타인 형님 말씀을 좀 따랐으면 좋겠습니다. “말할 수 없는 것에 대해선 침묵하라!”

 

그래서 생각난 노래. 미국 얼터너티브 록 밴드 ‘노 다우트(No Doubt)’가 1995년 발표한 ‘돈 스피크(Don't Speak)’입니다. 밴드명도 노래 제목도 두 단어로 짧습니다.

 

이별을 예감한 상태에서 헤어지자는 말을 꺼내려는 상대에게 “제발 그 입 다물라”라고 애절하게 호소하는 노래죠. 무슨 말을 꺼낼지 다 아니까, 당신 좋은 사람인 거 다 아니까 제발 어떤 설명도 하려들지 말고 그냥 조용히 떠나달라고. 밴드의 리드싱어인 그웬 스테파니의 실제 경험담을 녹인 가사라고 합니다.

 

지금 온갖 요설을 떠드는 분들이 좋은 사람인지는 솔직히 모르겠습니다. 하지만 그렇게 뻔한 말만 자꾸 할 거면 그냥 잠자코 계세요. 그렇게 뻔한 말은 다 가시가 돼 상처만 주니까요. 그러니 제발 쉿!
